Job Description

Pacific Media Workers Guild
TNG-CWA Local 39521

Union Representative

Based in San Francisco, CA

Thousands of journalists and media workers have organized and joined The NewsGuild in the past few years. They’re doing it to save their jobs and our democracy. The Pacific Media Workers Guild, TNG-CWA Local 39521 seeks a full-time Union Representative to support them. Our Local represents media workers as well as those in nonprofit, publishing and labor.

We’re looking for someone with a range of skills who thrives in a fast-paced environment. In recent years, PMWG has successfully organized several new shops. Winning strong first contracts is an essential element of this job.

The ideal candidate for this job has a minimum of five years of experience in collective bargaining and must be comfortable taking on tough national employers. Experience in the news industry is highly valued.

This role is hybrid and much of our time is spent meeting locally with members so it is important for the employee to live within a reasonable commuting distance.

The Pacific Media Workers Guild is an equal opportunity employer with members who care deeply about building an inclusive, diverse and equitable working environment.

This role is responsible for developing leadership across our membership to bargain, win, and enforce strong contracts.

We value demonstrated ability

  • to develop unit leadership and systems that are self-sustaining and rooted in theories of power and change
  • to guide members through and bottom-line private-sector contract negotiations, including research, developing proposals, costing of proposals, and planning and implementing creative pressure campaigns, up to and including strikes
  • to research, investigate and resolve workplace issues including management of grievance, arbitration, and unfair labor practice charges
  • to navigate local, state and federal labor laws and the evolving nature of the National Labor Relations Board and Department of Labor
  • to support workers who are organizing a union for the first time, building to supermajority support, implementing democratic unit decision-making processes, and navigating the NLRB certification process
  • to think strategically, exercising a high level of independence and judgment
  • to give and receive feedback
  • to establish rapport with and organize members in widely diversified social and economic groups
  • to navigate and guide others through tense moments of interpersonal conflict
  • to collaborate with local and national stakeholders to set goals, track progress and work through collective challenges
  • to facilitate meetings and develop written and visual communications including newsletters, reports, social media, training materials and more. Proficiency with computers and tech is a must.
  • to stay informed on state and national political issues that may impact the news industry
  • to manage an intense workload, with a strong preference for someone who excels at project mapping and management

A valid California driver's license and personal vehicle will be needed to perform this job. Nights and weekends are regularly required.

The salary range for this position is $80,000 – $105,000.

To Apply:
Please email staff@mediaworkers.org with a résumé and a cover letter describing your experience and approach to the job. Please note “ PMWG staff rep application ” in the subject line.
