The Teaching Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the lead teacher and nurturing Antilles School’s youngest learners in the Early Learning Center and Lower School. This role may be assigned to a Toddler, Pre-K, or Kindergarten classroom based on school needs.
The assistant helps to create a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate, play-based environment where children can grow socially, emotionally, and cognitively. This role involves active participation in classroom routines, transitions, and caregiving responsibilities, as well as collaboration with colleagues and families to promote a warm, inclusive community.
Ideal candidates are reliable, flexible, and enthusiastic about working with young children. They bring a collaborative spirit, strong communication skills, and a commitment to the school’s mission of fostering excellence, diversity, and community.
Core Responsibilities:
Instructional & Classroom Support
Support the lead teacher in implementing daily routines, classroom management, social emotional development, and transitions
Assist in facilitating student engagement during circle time, small groups, and play-based learning activities
Reinforce lessons and activities introduced by the lead teacher to support student understanding and participation
Prepare and organize instructional materials (e.g., laminating, cutting, assembling resources) to support classroom learning
Assist in documenting student learning through photos, observations, and classroom platforms (e.g. Seesaw)
Student Care & Safety
Support children with age-appropriate self-care routines, including toileting, diapering (as applicable), handwashing, and feeding
Supervise students during indoor and outdoor play, ensuring a safe and supportive environment
Assist with rest/nap time routines, including setup, supervision, and cleanup
Classroom Maintenance
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized classroom environment in partnership with the lead teacher
Support daily classroom setup, transitions, and end-of-day reset of materials and learning spaces
Assist with preparing and maintaining classroom displays and bulletin boards
Community & Professionalism
Follow the guidance and direction of the lead teacher in all aspects of classroom instruction and management
Work collaboratively with colleagues to support a positive and cohesive classroom and school environment
Maintain professional, respectful communication with students, families, and colleagues
Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and active engagement throughout the school day
Support classroom assessment activities and readiness tasks as directed by the lead teacher
Participate in school events and contribute to the broader life of the school
Qualifications & Skills:
High School Diploma required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field preferred
Experience working with young children in a school or childcare setting preferred, with an understanding of or interest in play-based learning approaches
CPR/First Aid certification preferred
Strong understanding of early childhood development and learning frameworks
Commitment to inclusive classroom practices and cultural competence
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficiency with educational technology and digital tools to support instruction
Warm, child-centered approach with strong interpersonal skills and a growth mindset
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in a dynamic, diverse school environment
